Cry Coyote
Well, the ecological collapse has begun, and you heard it here first. The evidence is mounting too fast, and the cautionary voices have been overridden or ignored.
All you have to do is read the newspapers. Not the editorial pages, just the news that filters through the SCM (state-controlled media – another blog to come).
The Greenland ice mass is melting faster than expected. The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is past the point where even if all human activity stopped today, the planet would continue to warm well past any historical norms. The dead zones and algae blooms are increasing in the oceans. Excess CO2 is manifesting itself in the increasing acidity of the oceans. Weather volatility is increasing. There is more, but that's enough to start.
The impact of our sheer numbers is overwhelming the ability of the planet to cleanse itself. The impact of our sheer numbers is affecting the ability of other life forms to survive and thrive. The elasticity of the delicate balance that is our biosphere is stretched and ready to break.
The 4th of July
I hope everyone is having a lovely 4th. When this day comes around and it seems like the jingoistic, rightwing uber-patriots are dominating things, I always remember back to attending a 4th of July parade in Alameda, CA – just across the bay from San Francisco. This was 1996. Ten years ago, before the right had forced the polarization to …

Wile E. Coyote and Other Sly Trickster Tales
Now listen, I'm going to tell you a story. This was back when all the animals were people, before the Human People came. Creator called all them Animal People together and said, "There's going to be a change. New people comin', and you old people got to have new names. You come 'round tomorrow morning, and you can pick your own new names, first ones first until they're gone." And then he goes home to bed. Well that Coyote, he goes back to Mole, his wife, and he's all frettin' now, he's scratchin' and he's thinking hard, and Mole, she's lookin' nervous 'cause there's always trouble close behind when Coyote starts to think. "Mole," he says, "build up that fire, I'm going to stay awake all night. I'm going to be the first in line tomorrow at Creator's door. I'm going to get a strong new name. A better name. A power name. Maybe I'll be Bear," he says. "Or maybe I'll be Salmon. Or maybe I'll be Eagle, and then they'll treat me with respect." So Coyote, he sits down beside that fire and tries to stay awake, but just a little while later he's fast asleep and snoring. Mole lets him sleep. She's thinking if Coyote gets a better name then maybe he'll just up and leave, that mangy, sneaky thing. She waits until the sun is high, and then she goes and wakes him up. Coyote runs right over to Creator, but he's much too late.
The Coyote & Buddha Variations
The Coyote & Buddha Variations by Canis Latrans The story: In one of his previous incarnations, Buddha was walking along the edge of a cliff and heard cries coming from below. Upon looking over the edge, he saw starving tiger cubs with a mother tiger too weak to feed them. The Buddha-in-progress leaped immediately to his death to provide nourishment …
Madonna of Bones
When you live in the doorway with things coming and going all around you, when you seek elusive tracks beyond the pale of men, sometimes what you find takes another shape, speaks in another voice than what you were expecting. This poignant excerpt from "White Heart" by Heather Rose speaks to that moment: Ambrose found a high, west-facing cliff of …
Equinox
Poised between the fires red of winter hearths
and the sweet cold pools of summer,
this equinox, this pivot point,
on which these seasons turn,
we stand.
Balanced here
upon the humus of a billion years,
the skeletons of diatoms and one celled shells
becoming (Oh! Becoming!)
many celled becoming trees reptiles mammals birds
these sturdy helices of fecund green and bloody red
that coil and uncoil across these millioned years
of endless cycling exhultations of oxygen and carbon,
sun-driven towards awareness and complexity,
unwilling and unknowing, we stand.
Here at this equinox, awakening.
